On the Eastside, your commute is one of the biggest quality-of-life factors a home address determines. With light rail now serving Bellevue and Redmond and major employers spread across the region, here's how the main neighborhoods stack up by access to the biggest job centers.
Closest to the Microsoft / Redmond campus
Redmond's Education Hill and Grass Lawn put you minutes from the campus by car, while Downtown Redmond adds light rail and walkability. Kirkland and parts of Bellevue (Bridle Trails, Crossroads) are also a short drive. Sammamish and Issaquah trade a longer commute for more space and top-rated schools.
Best for the Amazon Bellevue campus + downtown offices
Downtown Bellevue is the obvious winner — many residents walk or take a short transit ride, and the 2 Line connects the Spring District and BelRed. Kirkland, Bridle Trails, and Mercer Island are all quick drives into downtown Bellevue.
Easiest commute to Seattle
Mercer Island sits directly on I-90 with a light-rail connection, making it one of the easiest Eastside-to-Seattle commutes. Downtown Bellevue's 2 Line and Kirkland's SR-520 access are also strong. Generally, the closer to I-90, SR-520, or a light-rail station, the more predictable the Seattle commute.
How to weigh commute against everything else
Commute is one factor among schools, home type, lot size, walkability, and budget. The right move is to define your must-haves, then let the map narrow your neighborhoods. I'm happy to build you a short list that balances your commute with the rest of your priorities — and set up alerts for homes that fit.
Drive times vary significantly with time of day. Treat any estimate as off-peak; rush-hour can add 50–100% on the busiest corridors.
